Marajó

Also known as Marajó Island

Marajó is a large island in the mouth of the Amazon river, in the state of Pará, Brazil, covering about 40,000 square kilometres of savanna, swamp and forest. Between about 400 and 1400 CE it was home to the Marajoara culture, which built large earthen mounds and made elaborate painted pottery. Today it is known for its herds of water buffalo.
