British Kaffraria

1847–1866 · 19th century

British Kaffraria was a British territory between the Keiskamma and Kei rivers in present-day Eastern Cape, South Africa, annexed by Governor Sir Harry Smith in 1847 after the War of the Axe. Governed from King William's Town and made a separate crown colony in 1860, it was settled by Xhosa under British control and by German military settlers, and it was annexed to the Cape Colony in 1866.
