Burundian Civil War

1993–2005 · 20th century

The Burundian Civil War was fought from 1993 to 2005 between the Tutsi-dominated army and Hutu rebel groups. It began after the assassination of Melchior Ndadaye, Burundi's first democratically elected Hutu president, in October 1993, and an estimated 300,000 people died. The Arusha Agreement of 2000 and later ceasefires led to a new constitution and elections in 2005.
