Burtas
The Burtas were a people of the middle Volga region mentioned by Arab and Persian geographers of the ninth and tenth centuries, living between the Khazars and the Volga Bulgars. Their language and origin are disputed: many scholars consider them Finno-Ugric, related to the Mordvins, while others suggest Iranian or Turkic links. They traded furs and were at times tributaries of the Khazars and the Bulgars.
