Old Great Bulgaria

c. 632–668 · 7th century · Also known as Great Bulgaria

Old Great Bulgaria was a Bulgar state on the steppe between the lower Dnieper, the Sea of Azov and the Kuban, formed by Khan Kubrat in the 630s from the Onogurs, Utigurs, Kutrigurs and other tribes. It broke up under Khazar pressure after his death. His sons led groups west to found the Danube Bulgarian state and north to the Volga, where Volga Bulgaria arose.
