Old High German
Old High German is the earliest recorded stage of the German language, used from about the eighth to the eleventh century. It was spoken in the eastern Frankish realm of the Carolingian Empire. The Oaths of Strasbourg of 842 CE contain one of its earliest surviving texts, sworn by Charles the Bald for Louis the German's troops.
