Canusium

Also known as Canosa di Puglia

Canusium, modern Canosa di Puglia, was one of the main towns of the Daunians in northern Apulia, famed for its rich chamber tombs and painted pottery. It sided with Rome in the Samnite Wars, and after the Roman defeat at Cannae in 216 BCE it sheltered the surviving soldiers. Under Rome it remained a prosperous town on the Via Traiana and later an early bishopric.
