Cariboo Wagon Road

1860–1865 · 19th century · Also known as Cariboo Road

The Cariboo Wagon Road was a road built between 1860 and 1865 by the colony of British Columbia from the lower Fraser valley through the Fraser Canyon to the goldfields at Barkerville. Constructed partly by the Royal Engineers and partly by private contractors, it ran about 600 kilometres and opened the interior to supply wagons. Much of its route is followed by today's highways.
