Carignan-Salières Regiment

1665–1668 · 17th century

The Carignan-Salières Regiment was a French infantry regiment sent by Louis XIV to New France in 1665, the first regular troops in the colony. Its roughly 1,200 men built forts along the Richelieu River and in 1666 burned Mohawk villages, forcing the Iroquois to make peace in 1667. More than 400 of its soldiers stayed on as settlers.
