Carthaginian Iberia

237–206 BCE · 3rd century BCE

Carthaginian Iberia was the territory in southern and eastern Spain ruled by Carthage under the Barcid family from 237 BCE, when Hamilcar Barca landed at Gades, until the Roman conquest in 206 BCE. Its silver mines and manpower rebuilt Carthaginian power after the First Punic War, its capital was Carthago Nova, and it was Hannibal's base for the invasion of Italy in 218 BCE.
