c. 275–228 BCE · 3rd century BCE

Hamilcar Barca was a Carthaginian general who commanded in Sicily in the last years of the First Punic War and then crushed the Mercenary War in Africa. In 237 BCE he led an army to Iberia, where he conquered the Guadalquivir valley and its silver mines and founded a Carthaginian domain. He drowned in 228 BCE; his son-in-law Hasdrubal and his son Hannibal continued his work.
