Barcid Iberia
Origins
After losing Sicily in the First Punic War, Carthage sent Hamilcar Barca to Iberia in 237 BCE. Landing at Gadir, he conquered the Guadalquivir valley and its mines. After his death in about 229 BCE, his son-in-law Hasdrubal extended Carthaginian power by diplomacy and founded Qart Hadasht, later Carthago Nova, around 227 BCE.
Rule and society
Barcid Iberia was run almost as a family dominion of the Barcids, nominally under Carthage. Silver from mines near Qart Hadasht and the Sierra Morena paid for armies of Iberian, Celtiberian and African troops. Alliances with local rulers were sealed by marriages, such as Hannibal's to Himilce of Castulo. In 226 BCE the Ebro treaty with Rome fixed a northern limit.
Decline and legacy
Hannibal, in command from 221 BCE, took Saguntum in 219 BCE, starting the Second Punic War. Scipio captured Qart Hadasht in 209 BCE and won at Ilipa in 206 BCE, ending Carthaginian rule. The territory became the Roman provinces of Hispania Citerior and Ulterior.
