Hispania Ulterior

197 BCE–1st century BCE · 1st century BCE · Also known as Further Spain

Hispania Ulterior ('Further Spain') was a Roman province created in 197 BCE in the south and west of the Iberian Peninsula, centred on the Baetis (Guadalquivir) valley, with Corduba as its main city. Under Augustus it was divided into the provinces of Baetica and Lusitania. Its rich mines and farmland made it one of Rome's most valuable western territories.
