Hispania Citerior

197–27 BCE · 2nd century BCE · Also known as Nearer Spain

Hispania Citerior, "Nearer Spain", was the Roman province created in 197 BCE from Rome's conquests along the Mediterranean coast of eastern Iberia after the Second Punic War. Its governors extended Roman rule inland through the Celtiberian and Lusitanian wars. Augustus reorganised it as the much larger province of Hispania Tarraconensis, governed from Tarraco.
