Viriathus

d. 139 BCE · 2nd century BCE

Viriathus was the leader of the Lusitanians in their war against Rome from about 147 to 139 BCE. A survivor of Servius Sulpicius Galba's massacre of Lusitanians in 150 BCE, he defeated several Roman armies with guerrilla tactics and in 140 BCE forced a treaty recognising him as a friend of the Roman people. Rome renewed the war, and he was murdered by three of his own envoys, bribed by the consul Quintus Servilius Caepio.
