Airenosi

300 BCE – 195 BCE (approx.)

A Pyrenean people known only from Polybius' list of those Hannibal conquered in 218 BCE, possibly of the Val d'Aran.

Origins

The Airenosi appear in Polybius among the peoples between the Ebro and the Pyrenees subdued by Hannibal in 218 BCE. Their location is uncertain; they are often placed in the central Pyrenees, perhaps in the Val d'Aran, on the basis of their name.

Rule and society

Nothing is known of their society or government.

Decline and legacy

After Hannibal's conquest the region was held for Carthage by Hanno until the Roman advance. It came under Rome in the early 2nd century BCE, and the Airenosi disappear from the record.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
