Hamilcar I of Carthage

d. 480 BCE · 5th century BCE

Hamilcar was a Carthaginian general of the Magonid family who commanded the great expedition to Sicily in 480 BCE. Landing at Panormus, he besieged the Greek city of Himera but was defeated by Gelon of Syracuse and Theron of Akragas at the Battle of Himera, where he was killed or, according to Herodotus, threw himself into a sacrificial fire. The defeat checked Carthaginian expansion in Sicily for about seventy years.
