Castillo de San Marcos

1672–1695 · 17th century

The Castillo de San Marcos is a Spanish masonry fort at St. Augustine, Florida, built between 1672 and 1695 from coquina, a local shell stone. It replaced a series of wooden forts and withstood English sieges in 1702 and 1740, which burned the town but never took the fort. The oldest masonry fort in the continental United States, it is now a national monument.
