Huguenots

Also known as French Protestants

The Huguenots were French Protestants of the Reformed, or Calvinist, tradition. They fought the French Wars of Religion from 1562 and gained toleration under the Edict of Nantes in 1598. When Louis XIV revoked it in 1685, some 200,000 fled to the Dutch Republic, England, Prussia, Switzerland and overseas colonies, including the Cape of Good Hope, where about 200 settled from 1688.
