Cecil Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore

1605–1675 · 17th century · Also known as Cecil Calvert, Cecilius Calvert

Cecil Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore, was the English proprietor of the Province of Maryland. Charles I granted the charter to him in 1632 after his father George Calvert's death, and he sent the first settlers in 1634 under his brother Leonard, though he never visited the colony. He sought religious toleration for Catholics and Protestants, reflected in the Maryland Toleration Act of 1649.
