George Calvert, 1st Baron Baltimore

1580–1632 · 17th century

George Calvert, 1st Baron Baltimore, was an English politician who served as Secretary of State to James I before resigning in 1625 on his conversion to Catholicism. He founded the Colony of Avalon at Ferryland in Newfoundland in 1621 but found its climate too harsh. He then sought a charter for a colony further south, which was granted to his son Cecil Calvert as Maryland shortly after his death in 1632.
