Maryland
Maryland is a state of the eastern United States on Chesapeake Bay. Founded in 1634 as an English proprietary colony of the Calvert family, Lords Baltimore, it offered a refuge for Catholics and grew rich on tobacco worked by indentured servants and enslaved Africans. It was one of the thirteen colonies that declared independence in 1776, and Washington, D.C. was carved partly from its land.
