Chesapeake Bay
Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in the United States, extending about 300 kilometres from the mouth of the Susquehanna River in Maryland to the Atlantic in Virginia. Its shores were home to Algonquian peoples such as the Powhatan and to the Susquehannock, and the English colonies of Virginia and Maryland grew along its rivers from 1607 on tobacco exports.
