Delaware River
The Delaware River flows about 480 km from the Catskill Mountains to Delaware Bay, forming parts of the borders of New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. In the 17th century the Dutch, the Swedes of New Sweden and the English competed for its fur trade, and William Penn founded Philadelphia on its west bank in 1682. Washington's crossing of the river in December 1776 led to the American victory at Trenton.
