Carl Linnaeus

1707–1778 · 18th century · Also known as Carl von Linné, Linnaeus

Carl Linnaeus was a Swedish botanist, physician and zoologist, professor at Uppsala University, who formalised the modern system of naming and classifying living things. His Systema Naturae of 1735 set out a hierarchical classification of nature, and his Species Plantarum of 1753 established the two-part Latin names, genus and species, still used for plants and animals.
