William Penn

1644–1718 · 17th century

William Penn was an English Quaker and the founder of the Province of Pennsylvania. Son of the admiral Sir William Penn, he became a trustee of West Jersey and a proprietor of East Jersey, and in 1681 Charles II granted him a vast colony west of the Delaware River to settle a debt owed to his father. He planned Philadelphia and guaranteed religious freedom; in 1682 he also received the Lower Counties that became Delaware.
