Cedula of Population

1783 · 18th century · Also known as Cédula de Población, Real Cédula de Población

The Cédula de Población was a royal decree issued by Charles III of Spain in 1783 to encourage the settlement of Trinidad. It offered free land, tax exemptions and other privileges to Catholic immigrants from friendly nations, with additional land for each enslaved person they brought. It drew many French planters and free people of colour from the French Caribbean, giving the island a strong French Creole character.
