Ceded Mile
The Ceded Mile was a strip of land about one mile deep along the north bank of the Gambia River, opposite Bathurst (Banjul), ceded by the king of Niumi to Britain in 1826. It allowed the British to command the river mouth, and Niumi's attempts to reverse the cession led to the Barra War of 1831–32. The strip was administered from Bathurst and later became part of the colony of The Gambia.
