Essau
Essau is a town on the north bank of the Gambia River in the North Bank Region of The Gambia, opposite Banjul. It was a royal seat of the Mandinka kingdom of Niumi, whose kings were chosen in rotation from royal lineages in several towns. Essau was a centre of fighting in the Barra War of 1831–32, and the nearby Fort Bullen was built by the British in 1826.
