Essen

Essen is a city in the Ruhr in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It grew around Essen Abbey, a community of noble canonesses founded in the 9th century whose princess-abbesses ruled the town until 1803. In the 19th century coal mining and the Krupp steel and armaments works made it one of the industrial centres of Europe, and its former abbey church became Essen Cathedral in 1958.
