Essen Cathedral

Essen Cathedral is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic diocese of Essen in the Ruhr, Germany. It was built as the church of Essen Abbey, a community of noble canonesses founded in the 9th century, and keeps its Ottonian westwork and a Gothic hall church. It became a cathedral when the diocese was founded in 1958, and its treasury holds the Golden Madonna and other masterpieces of Ottonian art.
