Theophanu, Abbess of Essen
Theophanu was abbess of Essen from 1039 until her death in 1058. A granddaughter of Emperor Otto II through his daughter Matilda and Ezzo, Count Palatine of Lotharingia, she enlarged the abbey church with a new westwork and crypt and enriched its treasury, notably with the jewelled Theophanu Cross. She is counted among the abbey's most important rulers.
