Theophanes the Greek

c. 1340–c. 1410 · 14th century · Also known as Feofan Grek

Theophanes the Greek was a Byzantine painter of icons and frescoes who worked in the Russian lands from about the 1370s. His frescoes of 1378 in the Church of the Transfiguration on Ilyina Street in Novgorod are his only surviving securely attributed murals. In Moscow he worked with Andrei Rublev on the iconostasis of the Cathedral of the Annunciation in 1405, shaping the course of Russian icon painting.
