Decembrists

1825 · 19th century · Also known as Decembrist revolt

The Decembrists were Russian army officers and nobles who staged a revolt in St Petersburg on 14 December 1825 (Old Style), refusing to swear allegiance to Nicholas I and seeking a constitution or a republic and the end of serfdom. The rising, and a second in the south, was quickly crushed; five leaders were hanged and over a hundred exiled to Siberia. Later Russian liberals and revolutionaries honoured them as martyrs.
