Hildesheim
Hildesheim is a city in Lower Saxony, Germany, south-east of Hanover. Louis the Pious founded its bishopric in 815, and under Bishop Bernward around 1000 it became a centre of Ottonian art; its cathedral and St. Michael's Church are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The prince-bishops ruled a territory until 1803, after which it passed to Prussia and in 1815 to the Kingdom of Hanover.
