Hilderic

reigned 523–530 · 6th century

Hilderic was a king of the Vandals in North Africa, a grandson of Gaiseric and, through his mother, of the Roman emperor Valentinian III. He ended the persecution of Nicene Christians and sought friendship with Constantinople. After his forces were defeated by Moorish tribes, his cousin Gelimer deposed him in 530 and later had him killed, giving Justinian a pretext for invasion.
