Lower Saxony
Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen) is a state in north-western Germany, with its capital at Hanover, stretching from the North Sea and the Frisian islands to the Harz mountains. It was formed by the British occupation authorities in 1946 from the Prussian province of Hanover and the states of Brunswick, Oldenburg and Schaumburg-Lippe. Many medieval counties and principalities of the Holy Roman Empire lay within its territory.
