Harz
The Harz is the highest mountain range of northern Germany, spread across Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, with the Brocken (1,141 metres) as its highest peak. Its silver, copper and lead mines, worked from the Middle Ages, enriched towns such as Goslar and the surrounding princely houses. Its forests and fringes were divided among many small territories of the Holy Roman Empire, including Stolberg, Wernigerode, Blankenburg and Anhalt.
