Brocken
The Brocken is the highest mountain of the Harz range in Saxony-Anhalt, rising to 1,141 metres. Wrapped in fog for much of the year, it is famed in German folklore as the gathering place of witches on Walpurgis Night, a scene used by Goethe in Faust. During the Cold War it lay in the East German border zone and housed Soviet and East German listening posts.
