Harzburg
The Harzburg was a royal castle built by Emperor Henry IV from about 1065 on a hill above present-day Bad Harzburg in the Harz mountains. It was the chief of a ring of fortresses that the Saxon nobility saw as instruments of royal oppression, and in 1074, during the Saxon revolt, rebels took and destroyed it, desecrating the royal graves in its church. Its ruins remain on the Burgberg.
