Maria Kunigunde of Saxony

1740–1826 · 18th century

Maria Kunigunde of Saxony was a daughter of Augustus III, king of Poland and elector of Saxony, and sister of Clemens Wenceslaus, the last elector of Trier. From 1776 she was princess-abbess of both Essen and Thorn, the last to hold either office. She lost Thorn when French forces overran it in 1794, and Essen when it was secularised and given to Prussia in 1803. She died in Dresden.
