Mathilde, Abbess of Essen

949–1011 · 10th century

Mathilde was abbess of Essen from 973 until her death in 1011. A granddaughter of Emperor Otto I through his son Liudolf, she made the abbey a centre of Ottonian art and learning, commissioning works such as the Golden Madonna and the Otto-Mathilde Cross and rebuilding its church. The English chronicler Æthelweard dedicated his Latin chronicle to her as a kinswoman.
