Otto-Mathilde Cross
The Otto-Mathilde Cross is a jewelled processional cross made around 982 for Essen Abbey. An enamel plaque at its foot shows Abbess Mathilde with her brother Otto, Duke of Swabia and Bavaria. Made of gold over an oak core and set with precious stones and cloisonné enamels, it is one of the masterpieces of Ottonian goldwork and is kept in the treasury of Essen Cathedral.
