Kunta Kinteh Island
Kunta Kinteh Island is a small island in the Gambia River, formerly St Andrew's Island and then James Island. Courland built a fort there in 1651; the Dutch seized it in 1659 and the English in 1661, naming it after the Duke of York. It was a base of the slave trade and is now a World Heritage Site.
