Barra War

1831–1832 · 19th century · Also known as Anglo-Barra War

The Barra War was a conflict in 1831–32 between the British colony at Bathurst (Banjul) and the Mandinka kingdom of Niumi, also called Barra, on the north bank of the mouth of the Gambia River. After fighting began at Essau and Barra Point, British and French forces defeated Niumi, which in 1832 confirmed its earlier cession of the Ceded Mile to Britain. It marked the start of British control over the north bank.
