Barquq
Barquq was a Circassian Mamluk who became sultan of Egypt and Syria in 1382, founding the Burji line of sultans. Briefly deposed in 1389, he regained the throne in 1390 and ruled until his death in 1399. He resisted the advance of Timur in Syria and built a large madrasa and khanqah complex in Cairo, and his reign began more than a century of Circassian rule.
