El Dorado

16th century · 16th century

El Dorado, 'the golden one', was a Spanish legend of a native ruler covered in gold dust, which grew into the myth of a golden city or kingdom in the interior of South America. It arose from the Muisca rite at Lake Guatavita in which a new chief offered gold to the waters. It drove many costly expeditions, including those of the Welsers and Walter Raleigh.
