Lake Guatavita
Lake Guatavita is a small circular lake in the eastern Andes of Colombia, north-east of Bogotá, sacred to the Muisca. In the installation of a new ruler, the chief was covered in gold dust and made offerings of gold on a raft in the lake, the origin of the legend of El Dorado. Spanish and later treasure hunters tried repeatedly to drain it.
