Chief Joseph

1840–1904 · 19th century · Also known as Hinmatóowyalahtq̓it, Joseph the Younger

Chief Joseph was a leader of the Wallowa band of the Nez Perce people of the Pacific Northwest. When the United States government ordered his people onto a reservation in 1877, he and other leaders led some 800 Nez Perce on a fighting retreat of about 1,900 kilometres towards Canada, surrendering in the Bear Paw Mountains just short of the border. Exiled with his people to Indian Territory and later to Washington state, he spent the rest of his life seeking their return to the Wallowa valley.
