Chilean Civil Code
The Chilean Civil Code, drafted by Andrés Bello and promulgated in December 1855, came into force in 1857. Drawing on Roman law, Spanish legislation and the French Napoleonic Code, it regulated persons, property, contracts and inheritance in clear, systematic language. It was adopted almost unchanged by Ecuador and Colombia and influenced the civil law of several other Latin American countries.
